I came here for lunch one day with a friend. I ordered the Crunchy Dynamite roll, the Spicy Tuna roll, and the Chicken Teriyaki Hibachi lunch. The rolls were absolutely delicious. There is not a critical thing I can say about them. The chicken teriyaki hibachi was delicious and the salad that came with it was delicious as well. Now the not so great. The service was slow and absent minded. And the fried rice that came with the hibachi lunch wasn't at all what I am used to at hibachi places. I cook fried rice at home sometimes (and I'm not a great cook) and this fried rice LITERALLY tasted exactly like the fried rice I make at home...but with too much pepper. Next time, I'll save the upcharge for the fried rice and stick to steamed. I can't do anything about the service, so minus 1 star.

The sushi was fine, but there are better options in BR that won't be as loud or expensive. The service was good, I just left thinking "Man, I spent $70 on stuff I could've spent $40 on somewhere else." It's a great location with a cool interior, but I doubt I'll be back unless it's by special request of a date. What can I say, I'm a softy.

Fuji Apple Sake is here!!! But no plum sake, and god help you if you want to drink it cold. You have to order separate plum wine and sake. Also ask for the ice carafe to get your sake cold and then mix plum wine in your own glass...very tedious work but worth it when you are too lazy to drive elsewhere. The steak teriyaki is delicious! The portion I received at dinner was twice the norm! I can't say that I like their salad dressing, its pineapple mango yuck! But I am old-fashioned in the sense that good ole' ginger dressing suits my palette in a sushi joint. Speaking of sushi, the Salmon Zest Roll is the best refreshing citrus roll ever created! Comes with its own sauce that is richer than plain old soy sauce and definitely pairs perfectly. I've been here several times, but failed to checkin (I was new to Yelp). I gave 4 stars because the left side of the restaurant is not as friendly (staff and decor) as the right side. So if you have a choice of scenery, veer right for good times and friendly folks to converse with.

I always have a great time at this place- one of my fav restaurants in Baton Rouge. We got the baked salmon rolls as an appetizer and it was amazing. The garlic salmon and voodoo queen rolls were also amazing. Everything is super fresh and they have a great sake selection.

Presentation of every dish I get is pretty cool! There is outside seating but it's not as nice. The inside is decorative. Staff is always very friendly! And Tuesday they have a great $5 lsu roll! Super casual I always go with a bunch of girlfriends

Do you want the best sushi, drinks, and atmosphere around? Rock N Sake is by far the best sushi i e had in a very long time!!!! Service was fast & friendly and the price was excellent:)

I was a patron there tonight with my wife. We came here for date night, I was going to go to Hello Sushi, but I heard good things about your restaurant and wanted to do something different. When we arrived, your restaurant looked closed from the roadway, a neon OPEN sign would help greatly. When we walked in the hostess tried to sit us in the back by the bathrooms, I stopped her and insisted that we sit not so far back, since there wasn't anyone else there (except a family of 4 next to us) Our server was very nice, very attentive. The sashimi was good, even the Octopus was tender, kudos to the sushi chef for that. However the music was just way too loud. I asked to have it turned down just a notch and management politely declined. There is no acoustic insulation in that place anywhere, with no ceiling and polished concrete floors, it's a big echo chamber. The speakers were blasting HORRIBLE 90's dance music. C&C Music Factory? Seriously? And the system isn't mutli-zoned? To top it off every time the AC came on the ductwork shook, it made a huge rattling and you can see the 1 1/2 diameter tube move every time it powered up. Might want to have it look at before it falls. The owners need to do something about the acoustics and the playlist, and get a multi-zoned amp so it's louder in the bar than in the restaurant or at the sushi bar. I wish you the best of luck with your establishment, I hope you fix your loudness issues so we can enjoy your place again. My review may sound like a negative one, however the food is good, the atmosphere is what gets an F.

Be sure to get in here before the Yellowtail Neck runs out.

All I can say is "Where is the service?" While sitting at the bar, we could not get our bartender's attention to save our life. Her friends were much more important who were sitting further down the bar. And while the food was good - the sake is incredibly overpriced. A bottle of Black & Gold sake is $38 at RnS but only $17 at WholeFoods. So overall, I think we'll be going other places for sushi for a while...

Overall, I will probably only go back to get food to go. I brought a friend here because it was the last night of restaurant week, and I wanted to take advantage of the opportunity. We walked in, and I had no choice but to notice how loud the music was. We were sat at a little table toward the back, and my friend and I had to shout our conversation to each other. Since the music was so loud, everyone in the restaurant had to shout, and so the whole restaurant was just a dinner-long assault on the ears. It was also surprisingly frigid in there too (more on this later). Since we went in for restaurant week, we kept to that menu. We both had the shrimp wontons. They came on a neat little plate and were in a sweet chili kind of sauce. I enjoyed the flavor of these immensely, with my one criticism being that they should be a little smaller to make eating them a lot easier. Besides being cold and and loud, our dinner was off to a nice start. I am not sure exactly what my friend had, but it was a noodle dish with vegetables. It came out probably a good five minutes before my salmon did. That was really weird. I understand that not all dishes take the same amount of time to prepare, but there is generally some kind of etiquette that dictates the food comes out together. Now, while I did not have to wait an upsetting amount of time for my salmon, what happened next was just weird. My plate was cold. Not room temperature, not less warm than is usual. It felt like my plate had been stored in a fridge until about 10 minutes before the put my fish on it. My salmon was hot, it was delicious, but it didn't stay hot (and the side of asparagus was cold before I even got to it). I enjoyed it a good deal. I am not proud of what happened next. I like to be adventurous when I go out to eat. I tried that panna cota with chocolate eel sauce for dessert. I am not an expert in all things eel sauce, but I remembered that it is salty. When I read the menu, I thought that is would be like a chocolate sauce with an interesting flavor added to make it novel. I was WRONG. It was eel sauce that they added a hint of chocolate to. I took one bite, and shuddered. This is literally the only time in my life that I have sent back a dish to be replaced by something else. My waitress was a trooper and brought me out some strawberry mochi which was like some strawberry ice cream in a weird little gelatin ball (I enjoyed it, though my Thai friend told me it wasn't real mochi). My waitress, Emily, was a trooper the whole time and just rolled with the punches. Unfortunately, I was not impressed, though I wanted to be.

Good Sushi, vaguely expensive. Plenty of vegetarian rolls and what looks to be some interesting non-vegetarian special rolls. A pretty classy joint considering it's in BR.
(3)M D.
In my opinion, this is the best sushi in town! Always fresh and has so many different rolls to choose from. It's a little too loud if you want to be able to have one on one conversation but other than that AMAZING! The red dragon roll and the salmon zest are a must!
(5)Adam B.
Ate here for the first time a couple days ago. Atmosphere was very nice, music was good, and sushi was very good. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a new place to enjoy sushi!
(5)Adam K.
The scallops appetizer was pretty good. Sushi was pretty good also. Music was way too loud. What I did have have a problem with was that the server added an auto-grat of 18% on a table of 3. What a shame...I usually leave more than that. I'm pretty sure they do this to try to get people to double tip them!
(3)Prisha P.
Great FRESH sushi! Chef Josh creates the best/most unique rolls! Start with the upside down roll.. it is like nothing you have ever tried... the garlic sauce that it comes with is so tasty and i love how it comes on a sizzling plate. Red Dragon & Voodoo Queen Roll is amazing as well.. Ambiance is loud and music is pretty loud too so if your looking for a quite cozy dinner this may not be the place for you... it's always a great place to start off before going out on a friday/saturday night.. or just a dinner with a big group. Service is always great and good selection of sake (black & gold)!

A bunch of years ago I was introduced to sushi at the Benihana in downtown Atlanta. That's a pretty generic place to get started, and didn't really shed much light on what the sushi world is all about. The next place I tried sushi was a slick Atlanta joint called Ru-San's. I only later gathered that Ru-San's was based on a very common sushi template that is still going strong two decades later: The So-Cal-wannabee Americanized sushi place. The original Rock-n-Sake, which opened a few blocks from my then-workplace in New Orleans in the late 90s, is cut straight from that same template. (A big surprise, given the name "Rock-n-Sake"....) It actually had half-way decent sushi, though, as I recall, even if the atmosphere was really annoying. This new-ish Baton Rouge location is pretty similar, with some minor 21st century updates. The atmosphere is slick and clubby and loud, and the clientele, especially at this college-town location, is mostly very young. The music, at least on the night we were there, sounded like an MTV playlist circa 1982 to 1987, as if to evoke some fantastical (and never-ending) '80s SoCal nostalgia. (And as somebody who lived through that dogcrap music back in the day, rest assured that I don't need to hear it again for the rest of my life.) And the sushi is mostly Americanized and cooked--more so than I remember at the N.O. location--which isn't my thing. The menu actually has a little symbol to indicate rolls that actually have raw fish, and probably only about a half dozen out of about 40 specialty rolls actually bear that symbol. The rest are junk-sushi creations that might have been dreamed up for Guy Fieri's latest enterprise, along with a handful of standards like the Rainbow Roll. So why the hell was an apparently grumpy old bastard like me even bothering with such a place? Well, I live in Ohio these days, where good sushi is hard to come by, and I had fond memories of much-better sushi in Louisiana. And we were craving some sushi. And Rock-n-Sake offers a relatively short list of nigiri, sashimi, and old-school rolls with raw fish. We ordered some of this stuff (the basics, like whitefish, salmon, tuna, etc.), and given the rest of the experience, it was very fresh, clean-tasting, well-prepared, and surprisingly good. It is for this satisfying, simple sushi that I bump this rating up to three stars.
(3)Aimee T.
Is it possible to give no stars? Food is amazing without a doubt. The service, however, has left me utterly displeased on 3 of 4 occasions. Tonight, half our party was served somewhat promptly. The other half waited an hour and a half for food while the rest of us had been served and eaten our food. Other occasions have left us with missing appetizers and empty drinks for an hour. Do yourself a favor and head to Tsunami. Management of Rock N Sake is clearly a bad joke.
(1)Nicole A.
Very modern hip place! The atmosphere is cool. The sushi is amazing! True showmanship with the presentation on your plates. The sushi is so fresh. You can taste the quality. And you have to try one of the Japanese beers. They are a real treat too!
(5)J. G.
Good location, good food, great service. As someone else mentioned, it's not the most traditional sushi in Baton Rouge, but it doesn't try to be. They serve delicious rolls of all stripes. Some of my favorites: the Yellowtail roll, which is a surprisingly well-balanced roll of yellowtail, green onion and avocado. The green onion hits right at the end of the bite, so the flavor profile is pretty exciting. Then there's the Rebel Rice Paper Roll - barbecue eel with sauce, avocado, and snowcrab, no rice, in a stretchy dumpling-like wrapper. I can't remember the names now, but there are more interesting ones, like the lemon zest and salmon roll. The ambiance is fun - the ceilings are lit by electric glass jellyfish and it's pretty comfortably dim. Service is very fast, very thorough and accommodating. The waitress on our last visit, Sammie (Thuy), was fantastic. She moved us from a table under the vent, kept an eye on us so that she came just when we needed her, and was totally on the ball. Best of all? We had kind of a small dinner, and we were done fairly quickly. When she asked if we'd like to order more rolls and we said no, she didn't just bolt for the check - she asked if we'd like to continue hanging out and visiting or if she should bring it. This was on a Saturday night and they were fairly busy. I felt bad that we didn't get drinks or anything (still kind of recovering from Friday...) so that our tip wasn't huge for a Saturday. We'll definitely be back and I highly recommend it.
(5)Manny L.
Arrive early or call in for a reservation. Fills up quick. We sat at sushi bar and had a great experience. Sushi chef suggested rolls not on menu. Margarita roll and upside down roll are are a must try!!!
(5)Newly P.
Too loud, average food, and very very slow service just about sums up this place. We reached the place around 8. My friends were there around 7:30, but we had to hang around at the bar for an hour before we got a table and then by the time we were served and done with the food, it was 10:30! Of course, by then, I had lost my appetite. Which was great because the food was just average. We ordered an assortment of sushi: California rolls, upside down roll, spicy tuna, yellow fin, rock n roll sushi etc. None of them were worth that long exhausting wait. I do agree with Paulina N. about the parking situation. It's a bit tricky...you have to either park under the freeway or behind the restaurant.
(2)Alexandra R.
Somehow not as good as the New Orleans location, but that's a different story. There aren't too many sushi restaurants around this location, and this is usually my go to. They also have great lunch specials. I'm a fan of the sushi here, and I actually enjoy the atmosphere. But I come here knowing that the music is going to be loud. Slower service on the weekends, somehow despite how busy they are! The one thing they really need to improve on is the take-out. First, getting the bar tender's attention can prove near impossible on a busy night. Second, check, check, and triple check your order before you leave. I've experienced everything from left out sauces, no chopsticks (maybe the worst), the wrong roll, and then nothing but broth in my miso soup. It's really disappointing if you get home, only to discover you've been gypped!
(3)Ann H.
How do people like this place? It's incredibly loud and the food is far from authentic. The miso soup was terrible - tiniest bits of tofu and not much else. It tasted like it came out one of those dried packets you'd buy at the grocery store. The edamame was hard and had clumps of salt all over the top. How do you screw up miso soup and edamame - seriously? The reason I have it 2 stars instead of 1 is because the sushi rolls were good. Not fantastic or great, but good. We at them and left will full bellies. Will never eat there again.
(2)R. S.
Tap out tees, pumping house music, and the careful preparation of beautiful sushi do not go together.
(2)Daniel M.
Rock N Sake has moved to Baton Rouge and I like it. The food is very good, if a little pricey. The atmosphere is fun and gets louder as the nite gets later. They're definitely Rockin'. It's not unusual to see people dancing and singing at their tables (especially if you're at my table). Cool place to check out some great art as well. Alex Harvie is on display in the bar and his stuff is amazing. Check him out at Bohemia gallery on government, they have lot's of open house style parties. I suggest the scallops and the yellow tail neck. Ever eaten the face off a fish? Try it, you will be impressed.
(4)Mandy V.
I have fun here. Everything I've tried on the menu has been great!
(4)Lisa J.
Boy. Rock n' Sake wants really, really badly to be a super-cool, super-chic lounge and bar, just like those awesome sushi-joints it saw that one time when it visited the big city. You know the kind - eclectic sake-based drink menu, neon lights, pounding music, innovative sushi rolls, long couches and low tables to create an intimate atmospheres. RnS is trying so very hard to aspire to that sort of greatness; they have somehow managed to compile all of the sub-components of a fancy sushi lounge, but somehow those component parts are not coming together into a cohesive whole. The atmosphere comes off as a weird, contradictory combination of "too garish" but also "too understated." The drink menu looks interesting, but ultimately is just filled with over-sweetened, boring girly-drinks. The music is obnoxious and conversation-killing, rather than a subtle boost to the lounge-style atmosphere. In spite of the fact that RnS doesn't quite work as a chic sushi lounge, I was ready to give it a 4 star review based on the food (far be it from me to mark a yummy restaurant down on décor alone!). Alas, the sushi was simply average, in spite of all of the interesting-looking options. I don't remember both of the names of the rolls I ordered, but one was crab salad and avocado inside, with salmon on top. The other was an Upside Down roll - I don't remember what was inside, but the outside was tuna and then the entire roll was flipped onto a hot skillet covered in sauce and garlic, searing the tuna. The salmon roll was ok, but the fish was a little less tender than I like. The upside down roll was a cool idea, but the flavor of the garlic with the sushi didn't work all that well, and after a couple of bites I was sick of it (which is impressive, since I can eat roasted garlic by the clove and never get burnt out). I will say that our server handled our large party like a champ - he was very responsive, brought food as it was available, and split the check without us having to ask. So that was nice. Anyway, Rock n' Sake gets a pretty solid 3 stars. I don't know if there is a better option for lounge-style-sushi in Baton Rouge, but I'd much rather go somewhere like Ichiban when I'm here - it's quieter, classier, and significantly more fresh and delicious.
(3)Meghan K.
I have eaten at every sushi restaurant in BR and this one tops them all. Every roll I've ordered on the menu has been delicious. The rebel rice paper roll is amazzzziinnggg. The service has always been good and the music rocking (can be a little loud at times). It's hopping on a weekend so get there early!
(5)Steven A.
Awesome service. Sashimi was excellent. Great atmosphere. Responsive service.
(5)Courtney C.
I understand the concept, but the music is so irritating! Very in-your-face. The layout & color scheme is nice. Supposed to be stripped down sushi, but I could do without the crazy rock.
(3)Paulina N.
Let's start with the location. It's great and close to other things, like a boutique (Bella Bella). Parking is definitely a downfall. However, there is more parking in the back, but I'm not sure where... I thought the service and the atmosphere was great, but I really wish the food was just as good! We had the killer scallops and some type of tiger paw (raw fish on top of rice and etc.) to start off with. The scallops looked SO GOOD, but I was just disappointed. It didn't pack the flavor I was expecting. The tiger paw thingy wasn't very good at all. I just don't know what to say about it. The rest of the rolls we ordered were ok, but I've had better. I think I was just expecting something authentic and fresh, but I only got fresh (even fresh I'm not even sure of...). Rock-n-Sake is a fusion so if you're looking for something a little more on the Japanese side, don't come here. When I left, I didn't have that satisfying feeling. If anything, I thought, "We spent $100 on food we didn't like." Or perhaps we didn't order what was "good." I was just really disappointed because of all the good reviews it received (and the New Orleans location has a good reputation). Boo hoo. Maybe it was just a bad day. I'll come back next time and hope that it'll be better. Actually, maybe not. Hate to be the first one to write a bad review. On the flip side, they have happy hour all day on Game Days starting at noon :)

This Place is awesome! Very cool atmosphere, dark, trendy music I dig it! I feel in love with something they had on special It was called New Style Sashimi.. It is about 8-10 slices of your choice of Fish we chose escolare(WhiteFish) rubbed with roasted garlic clove and seared with hot truffle oil. It literally melted in my mouth. I could eat that all day everyday! I also love their Hawaii 5-O roll. (Tempura Cocunut shrimp with Cream cheese inside wrapped in rice. Topped with avocado and mango. Now im not the biggest coconut shrimp fan but my boyfriend insisted we order it seeing as he love coconut shrimp make sense right :D Anyway wow all these flavors worked amazingly together. The Shrimp was also not to coconuty....A must try! Overall Rock and Sake is quickly becoming my favorite sushi stop in baton rouge. It is indeed a little pricey but i think the freshness of the sushi makes it all worth it!

By far my favorite sushi place in Baton Rouge! Not all that authentic, but their rolls really work despite the somewhat untraditional ingredients and pairings. I'm in love with the salmon zest roll. Rice paper, salmon, and lemon zest? Oh yes please! I've tried at least 15 different rolls here and have loved each one. I really don't think you can go wrong here. Always fresh and prepared by sushi chefs who really know what they're doing. And the fact that I can walk to it really doesn't hurt either.

The freshest sushi in the Baton Rouge area and you can really taste the difference. The salmon and yellowtail are especially good. My favorite roll is the Salmon Zest Roll.
